Notes: Flower welcomed as a sign of spring. This plant was esteemed because it is one of the earliest shrubs to flower in the spring. The red or pink flowers which appear before the leaves gave rise to their saying 'pink flowers form into leaves.' Flowering branches were used in the homes to 'drive winter out.'
